Reading is a crucial part of any child’s development and at Nursery Hill, we are keen to ensure that all children are given the best opportunity to reach their full potential and become fluent readers.
In Early Years and Year 1, alongside our Little Wandle Phonics, we also champion Reading Practice. This is where the children read the same book with an adult 3 times a week. This book is linked to the phonemes that the children know and works on increasing their reading fluency as well as ensuring their comprehension. Those children in Year 2, who are continuing to develop their phonic knowledge will also have Reading Practice sessions. This book is then sent home with the child as an e-book, where we encourage the children to wow their parents with their fluency and understanding at home.
As children move on through school, they have books linked to their ability with some children having Rapid Catch Up phonics to ensure that they have all the strategies needed to develop their fluency in reading. To enhance their understanding of books, we use Hooked on Books by Jane Considine, encouraging Book Talk and then written comprehension answers based on our Reading Rainbow.
